Goodbye, Cable. Hello, Internet.

By now it’s abundantly clear that traditional video viewing systems — programming delivered by cable or satellite companies to television and paid for by advertisers — have ceded their dominance to internet-driven, on-demand, subscriber-based streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime, Hulu and the like.

The fundamental problem in the new viewing landscape, however, is that the convenience, portability and choice generated by on-demand viewing is at odds with the delivery system itself. Video files are so dense, so enormous, that the internet’s pipes just can’t consistently render them at the quality viewers and content creators wish.
